Science-Fiction Not-Spoiler

Read This Alien Shore, by C.S. Friedman. It's one of those books which manages to be great without necessarily being good: its plot is full of large holes and its characters are more or less archetypical. But its pacing is perfect, so I didn't notice the holes or the flatness until well after I'd whizzed through its did-I-really-just-read-564-pages?; and its setting is brilliant, and its metaphor of human nature is provocative and deep. I spent two weeks trying to write a thorough review that would do it justice; I couldn't. Just read the book.
