R. Baeck also understood the downside of being in a minority: he survived the Holocaust, though because of his prominence he was kept in relative comfort at Thierenstadt, the model camp the Nazis kept to show to international observers.

During that dark time, R. Baeck also spoke perhaps the most profound sentence I've ever heard: "The commandment of God is to live."
